Oakesdale ties for 1B title

Oakesdale and Mount Vernon Christian girls celebrate after locking up in a tie for the state 1B track title May 28 at Roos Field in Cheney with 69 points each.

Oakesdale track team members, on the right side, on the top row, left to right: Anne Hockett, Amber Jones, Emma Perry, Hayden Brown, assistant coach Betsy Rawls and coach Cap Perry.

Bottom row, left to right: Kaela Fisch, Aliya Rutledge, Logan Reed and Keith Cooper.

The Nighthawks and Mt. Vernon Christian had to wait out the tally of points after three days of competition to learn the results of the meet.

An announced tally near the end of the meet had Oakesdale trailing.

At that point, scoring for three events had yet to be added.

Oakesdale gained points with the second-place finish by Hockett in the 200 meter race.

MVC had a sixth-place finisher in that race.

The results were reversed in the 4x400 relay, the last running event, when MVC placed second and Oakesdale placed sixth.

The Nighthawks needed six points to tie, and they collected when freshman Reed landed third in the extended triple jump event at 31-10.

Oakesdale presently has a total enrollment of 36 in the high school and 28 in the three grades which are tallied for WIAA classifications.
