Colfax has received a $10,000 grant from the state Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation to conduct a historical inventory of sites in downtown Colfax from Island to Stevens Street. The project will be done under the auspices of the Colfax Historic Preservation Commission.
Councilman Jim Kackman July 5 said one of his concerns was to make sure that the project gets done. He noted the grant derives from federal funds which will eventually be subject to an audit finding.
The city anticipates a consultant will be hired to assist the local commission with the project. City Administrator Michael Rizzitiello noted the overall state funds for the program total about $100,000 a year, and the total amount of grant requests comes to approximately $200,000 per year.
