Serving Whitman County since 1877
Whitman County Superior Court approved an order to tear down this Endicott Road building April 21.
The proposed demolition of a Winona building is back on track following a call for bids that received no response.
After the call closed July 1, Public Works Director Mark Storey looked into a reason for the lack of response.
“We believe we left too much to guess within the bid,” Storey told county commissioners Monday.
The county will now seek a contract with a consultant – on its professional services roster – to ask for a proposal to perform the preliminary engineering on the property.
Once complete, the project will again be sent out to bid.
“They'll know better what they have to do and what they don't have to do,” Storey said.
Since the building is next to another structure, it is more than a simple tear-down.
The original bid packet sought a contractor to abate the building, and perform the necessary pre-engineering.
An abatement order for the structure, considered a hazard, was issued in superior court April 21.
The process began last year when a complaint came in about the building, which stands next to a residential property.
The structure in question is owned by a private party, Michael A. Smith, listed as a resident of Wapato. Multiple attempts were made to reach him, to no avail.
The last time the county abated a property was in 2006 on a structure in Farmington that was deemed a hazard because bricks were being removed for salvage.
