Serving Whitman County since 1877
Whitman County commissioners Monday accepted a $1,816,621 bid Monday for the Sand Road bridge-widening project from M.A. DeAtley of Clarkston.
Other bids were $2,322,798 from M.L. Albright & Sons of Lewiston and $2,163,437 from Western Construction, also of Lewiston.
For Edmundson Bridge on Sand Road, an increase in traffic has led to the need to widen the 19-foot-wide span on the 25-foot-wide road. The roadway serves as an alternate commuter route between Pullman and Moscow.
The concrete-arch bridge was built in the early 1900s.
Work is expected to be done sometime this fall, depending on permitting and other factors.
When construction begins, the road will be closed and the county will install a temporary detour crossing, a large culvert with a gravel fill over the top.
