The Washington State Department of Natural Resources this week released campfire safety public service announcements, which can be viewed on YouTube and on the DNR's website.
Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark encouraged the public to prevent wildfires by using caution with campfires and observing burn bans.
The DNR advises campers check with state and local authorities for burn bans and other fire restrictions prior to engaging in outdoor activities which might include fires.
Whitman County is classified by the DNR as a high risk area for burning.
A small wildfire June 26 at Kamiak Butte, which burned 10 acres at the park, is believed to have been caused by an illegal fire that was left unattended in a fire pit.
Whitman County Rural Fire District 14 issued a burn ban for Colton and Uniontown, as well as the surrounding areas. All outdoor burning is banned, with the exception of recreational fires in approved fire pits or outdoor fireplaces. Burning in all forms is banned along the Snake River.
