Endicott is planning to host its “second annual first Tin Foil Man” triathlon in the town Saturday, Aug. 27.
“It's gonna happen,” said Jamie Misner, one of the event organizers. “I'm so hopeful.”
Misner attempted to put together the first Tin Foil Man last August, but it had to be cancelled due to nearby wildfires and hazardous air quality.
“Hopefully things will stay clear from this area,” she said.
The Tin Foil Man triathlon will feature an adult version and two kids’ versions. The adult version, which is slated for an 8 a.m. start, will have a 250-yard swim, six-mile bike ride and 1.75-mile run. It can be completed either as a relay race with two to three team members or individually.
“The point is to get people out who normally maybe wouldn't do a triathlon,” said Misner. “If you can't make it to the (Coeur d'Alene) Ironman the week before, come to the Tin Foil Man.”
The adult course will have participants swim in the Endicott swim pool lanes with a possible wave start depending on the amount of participants.
If needed, the first wave will begin at 8 a.m.
and the next will follow at 8:15 to prevent overcrowding.
The Endicott pool has six lanes, but Misner said she might only be able to use five lanes because of a slide in the sixth.
The bike ride will follow starting near the school and going out toward Winona for three miles before turning around, for which the point will be marked for the cyclists.
The run will then go east on E Street, then down around the multi-floral park and back up going west on D Street before going up to the school driveway, left down that driveway and then back to the school and ending in the pool parking lot, said Misner.
The kids' versions, which are separated into older kids and younger kids, will go around the school area and also can be completed as either relays or individually. The older kids will have a 100-yard swim, two-mile bike ride and one-mile run, while the young kids will have a 50-yard swim, one-mile bike ride and a run a little less than half a mile. Which division kids end up in will depend on a parent's judgment.
“Parents will just have to judge their kid's ability and determine what they can do,” said Misner.
The kids' races will begin at 10 a.m.
Misner also said an informational meeting for participants to sign waivers is slated at 7:40 a.m. The marked meeting area in the transition area near the pool and school will be indicated with yellow caution tape, and Misner will have a table set up.
All participants will also receive a bib and number when signing the waiver, and all finishers will receive ribbons. Misner also said water and granola bars will be available at the finish. She received a grant from Thrivent Financial, a Christian financial group, in order to fund the bibs, ribbons, granola bars and water.
Misner said times will not be kept for participants, as the triathlon is not meant to be competitive, but instead focus on bringing the community together and having a good time.
“It's going to be fun,” she said.
Anyone is welcome to participate, regardless of where they live. Misner said that in the event the Tin Foil Man is forced to be cancelled again, updates can be found on the Endicott Parks & Rec Facebook page. If the event is cancelled, it will be posted there by 6 a.m. the day of the triathlon.
