Val Gregory, the daughter of Cedric and Diana Hall, was born and raised in Steptoe. Her grandparents came from Tennessee, one family of many which settled in Steptoe, which is still sometimes called Tennessee Flats.

Val came to her career indirectly. After graduating from Colfax High School, she graduated from Washington State University in sports medicine. She went to work at a physical therapy office in Wallace, Idaho, planning to apply to physical therapy school in the future. It was not as satisfying as working with athletes...
