WSU swine co-op hosting bacon fundraiser

The Student Swine Cooperative at WSU is hosting a bacon sale, and consumers have until Sept. 30 to place an order. Bacon can be ordered for $7 per pound.

Farrahn O'Hara, herd manager with the cooperative, said the fundraiser got its start last year in order to raise money for events.

“It started because we ended up inheriting ideas from graduating seniors and then put it all in motion,” O'Hara said. “It helps us to get more money to go to the World Pork Expo which is usually in the Mid-West. It costs a bit of money to go.”

The group is trying to send as many members as possible. It has 13 members, including a faculty and graduate student advisor.

The cooperative's goal is to sell 400 pounds of bacon.

“Last semester, our goal was 300 pounds, and we ended up selling 450 pounds,” said O'Hara.

O'Hara also said the cooperative works with WSU's meat lab to do custom hogs.

“We do raise our own pigs. We get 10 hogs per semester, and we raise them to market weight and then send to the meat lab on campus for customers to order from,” she said.

All of the bacon for the fundraiser comes from a packing facility in Spokane, and it is cured, smoked and sliced by Student Swine Cooperative members. Order forms can be found online, and they can either be emailed or mailed to the cooperative for processing.

Instructions for ordering are on the order form. The bacon can only be picked up at the WSU meat lab, which is next the WSU Alumni Center on campus. Bacon orders are expected to be ready for pickup by Nov. 5.
