Apple pie

class at Dahmen

The teaching kitchen in the new addition at the Dahmen Barn is complete. A grant from USDA Rural Development was used to purchase the appliances for the new commercial kitchen and another grant from the Inland Northwest Community Foundation was used to buy equipment and utensils for the new Culinary Arts program. Classes for both children and adults are included in this program and the kitchen may also be rented by food entrepreneurs.

The first adult class is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 28, beginning at 6 p.m. with an apple pie class taught by longtime barn volunteer Sharon Dixon, an award-winning pie baker. For years the barn had a pie baking contest in the fall and sold slices of pie after the contest as a fundraiser. Sharon's pies took top prize.

At this class, Sharon will hand out her favorite crust and apple filling recipes and will share the tricks she has learned from decades of pie baking. Participants will each make a crust and apple filling with ingredients provided and will take home a ready-to-bake pie and a small bag of flour donated by Shepherd's Grain. Sharon will bring a finished pie and participants will share it at the end of the session. The cost of the workshop is $30 which includes all ingredients. This class is limited to six participants and requires registration by Sep. 25.
