Secretary of State office announces literature, historical competition

The Washington Office of Secretary of State announced Monday two contests being conducted through the State Library which Washington students can take part in.

The first contest is open to students from fourth to 12th grades. It is the 24th annual Letters About Literature Contest, which is co-sponsored between the State Library and Washington Reads.

“The Letters About Literature contest encourages young readers in grades 4-12 to read a book and write a letter to the author about how the book changed their view of the world or themselves,” an online description reads. “Students can write about works of fiction, nonfiction or poetry. Entries in Spanish are accepted and will be translated for the Washington State judges.”

This contest is being split into three levels, with level one being students in fourth to sixth grades, level two seventh and eighth grades and level three ninth through 12th grades. The top letter writer in each level will be selected, and those three winners will advance to the national competition. These three winners will also receive a $125 cash prize, and the winners, runners up and honorable mentions will all be honored at an awards ceremony. Additionally, state semifinalists receive an award certificate, and national winners will receive a $1,000 cash prize and national honor winners will receive a $200 cash prize.

Entries are allowed to be submitted through a school or library or individually. Entry deadline for level three is Dec. 2 and Jan. 9, 2017, for levels two and one. Entries will begin to be accepted Nov. 2.

The second contest is the second annual Historical Zine Contest. A zine is a self-published magazine with limited print runs, often completed on a photocopier.

Participants in this contest are asked to create a zine about an aspect of Washington state history. Materials for the contest and creation can be found through the Secretary of State website by looking at the Washington State Digital Collections, Washington State Archives and Washington State Library through that website.

The contest is open to students in grades four through 12, as well as adults of all ages. The contest flyer and entry form can be found on the Secretary of State website, as can a link to how to make a zine.

Entries are now being accepted and will be accepted through Dec. 15.
