Felix Albert Aripa
A mass of Christian burial for Felix Albert Aripa, 93, elder in the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, was Sept. 21 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at DeSmet, Idaho. Burial followed at the DeSmet Mission Cemetery with military honors. Rosary was recited on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Evan Abraham Tribal Longhouse at DeSmet. The Rev. Robert Erickson officiated at the services.
Mr. Aripa died Sept. 16, 2016, at his home in Spokane Valley.
Born in Benewah County, Idaho, Sept. 9, 1923, to Stanislaus and Mary Emma (Joseph) Aripa, he attended the Mary Immaculate Board School at DeSmet and finished high school at Tekoa. He attended Gonzaga University in Spokane for a year before enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II. His ship, the USS Thompson, participated in the shelling of German forces on Omaha Beach during the allied invasion in Europe. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Fireman First Class.
He returned to Idaho and worked as a civil engineer on Northwest area road construction projects for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Warm Springs Reservation in Oregon. He retired in 1979.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and the Joseph Garry American Legion Post # 5. He was a member of the Natural Resource Department of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and a member of the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Language Department. He never married.
Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
