Serving Whitman County since 1877
After just two snaps last year in backup, Colton's Brady Chadwick has made the conversion from dangerous receiver to quarterback for his senior year.
In four games, he is 55 of 82 attempts for 1,311 yards, along with 332 yards rushing on 51 carries.
“He's off to a great start,” said Wildcats coach Clark Vining.
With a 3-1 record, Colton's only loss is to Salmon River, followed by wins over Wallace, Idaho, and Tekoa/Rosalia twice.
After another non-league matchup this week – a bus trip south into Oregon to play Elgin – the Vikings open league play Oct. 7 against St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse.
“Elgin is a run-first team, it'll be a real good test for us,” Vining said.
Colton has seven starters who have returned from last year; Chadwick, Grant Kinzer, Peter Schultheis, Tom Wolf, Cameron Bean, Luke Vining and Reece Chadwick.
While Chadwick leads the offense, he does the same for the defense, with 64 tackles at linebacker in four games. Bean, another linebacker, has 48 while Kinzer, a safety, has 37.
Colton 60, Tekoa/Rosalia 16
For the second time in two weeks, on Sept. 23, the Wildcats ran the Timberwolves back into the trees.
Playing at Rosalia, Chadwick threw for 334 yards on 14-for-20 passing and seven touchdowns.
Kinzer caught three passes for 121 yards, all for touchdowns. Cameron Bean had five catches for 52 yards and Luke Vining pulled in three for 61 yards and two touchdowns. He also had an interception.
Colton opened a lead quickly when Chadwick threw to Kinzer for a 65-yard touchdown. After Tekoa/Rosalia fumbled on its first play, Colton's Parker Druffel recovered and the Wildcats took over.
Chadwick soon found Kinzer for a 36-yard touchdown and 16-0 lead.
Only 57 seconds had elapsed on the clock.
The two teams also played Sept. 9, filling non-league slots on their schedules. Colton won 76-12.
The Wildcats kick off at Elgin Friday at 7 p.m.
