Fresh Air
We would just like to commend the teachers, administrators, board members and other support staff in the Colfax School District. According to the Gazette a couple of weeks ago, contract negotiations were not only successful, but positive and unifying. We found it a breath of fresh air to know you are successfully and happily working together to educate our children.

Kudos to deputy
At a time in this country when the discussion about the police is primarily negative I want to write about a local deputy who went above and beyond the call of duty to assist a local resident.
You might have read last week that a local resident in St. John was distraught about the loss of his house in an eviction. He was more than distraught, he was suicidal and had a gun. The deputies arrived and talked him out of a bad situation.
Deputy Mike Melcher then took him to a Colfax hotel. Mike made his phone available to this man to call me and actually walked him to the office to see me about this eviction. Mike then volunteered himself and a couple of deputies to repair this house to bring it up the level of care the mortgage company wanted.
Kudos to Mike Melcher and the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office. The citizens of the county should be proud he is here. I know I am.
