Art Happening

at Bank Left

A reception for "An Art Happening" at The Bank Left Gallery in Palouse featuring local artist and WSU grad Jeanne Fulfs will be Oct. 22 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The exhibit will run until Dec. 3.

Luncheon will be served Oct. 22 from noon to 2 p.m., and a Murder Mystery dinner will be Oct. 22, 6 to 8 p.m.

Garfield

seniors meal

Next Garfield seniors fellowship meal will be today, Oct. 20, beginning at noon at the Garfield Legion Hall. On the menu will be chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes smothered in gravy, assorted veggies, dinner roll and dessert. Gary Schmick of Colfax will talk after lunch on the changes in the Medicare system and how new laws will impact medicare recipients.

Spook cake

class at Dahmen

Dahmen Barn will present a class entitled Make a Spooky Halloween Cake Oct. 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. Instructor Julie Hartwig, owner of The Shop at the Barn, will instruct students on how to make a ghostly graveyard cake using fondant for the ghosts on top of the cake. The graveyard will be a chocolate ganache pour.

Hartwig has an associate professional bakery degree and has been a professional journeyman baker and caterer since 1979. She designs and makes simple cakes as well as sculpted cakes for weddings and birthdays.

The class fee is $45 with registration required by Friday, Oct. 21. There is a maximum of six students for the class.

Wine & Art Series

at Dahmen Barn

"Cabernet and Coloring, " the first in the monthly series of wine and art sessions at Dahmen Barn, will be Oct. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants will spend an evening coloring in intricate adult coloring books. All supplies are provided along with a glass of wine and appetizers.

The cost is $12 with registrations required by Oct 26.

At the November session the project will be making a Christmas ornament.

Thanksgiving class

slated at Dahmen

A Stress-free Thanksgiving workshop will be at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn Nov. 2 from 6 to 9 pm. This workshop is a combination of demonstration and hands-on learning experiences with Jamie Callison, Certified Executive Chef and inducted member of the American Culinary Association. She is an instructor in WSU's Carson School of Hospitality Business Management.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be eating turkey, stuffing, gravy, Brussel sprouts, and mashed potatoes with a glass of wine. For this workshop, students are expected to know basic cooking skills. Registration deadline is Oct. 30

Child discipline class slated at Palouse

Starting Oct. 26 Palouse Federated Church in Palouse will offer a monthly class for parents, teachers and childcare workers to help them develop effective techniques for child discipline.

Classes, which are open to the public and free of charge, will consist of a DVD presentation by Thomas Phelen and discussion about child discipline. The lessons cover easy and smart tools from America’s number one child discipline program.

“We have three basic jobs as parents, caregivers and teachers,” said Betty Sawyer, Family and Consumer Science Instructor. “The first is to control obnoxious behavior, the second is to encourage good behavior and the third is to strengthen the relationship with the child.

Watercolor session set at the Dahmen

A workshop for sketching and painting landscapes is scheduled at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown Oct. 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. This is a beginning to intermediate level workshop for adults taught by Wes Hanson from Spokane, a member of the American Watercolor Society. He has painted using watercolors and other mediums for 40 years and has taught at Dahmen numerous times. He also teaches drawing and painting classes for Spokane Art Supply and North Idaho College.

This two-day workshop on sketching and painting landscapes in watercolor is divided into two parts. On the first day participants will create a series of simplified landscapes using pencil, ink and watercolor. The second day will include basic watercolor painting techniques and painting one or more of the sketches. The cost for the workshop is $144. Registrations must be received by Tuesday, Oct, 25.

Athenaeum

Athenaeum Club began this year’s activities with its annual fall tea held at the Peace Lutheran Church. Mary Ann Wigen, chairman the program committee, welcomed 18 members.

In accordance with this year of “With a Song in Your Heart” 10 members of Inland Harmony, a women's Sweet Adelines chapter based in Genesee, sang several songs from different decades.

Club member Carole Ensley is a member of the group which consists of women from around the area.

Refreshments were served from a decorated tea table.

Next Athenaeum meeting will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the home of Mae Schultz. Members are asked to carpool because parking is limited.

PEO

Chapter AF met at the home of Mae Schultz, hostess. Lynn Nelson served as co-hostess, and 14 members responded to roll call by stating their favorite fall colors.

The Ways and Means Committee reported that they are in the planning stages for a tea to be held on Feb. 12, 2017.

Chapter AF will celebrate its 100-year anniversary March 9, 2017.

Robyn Tramposch gave a program on saving water.

The next meeting will be Oct. 24 at the home of Lynne Bruya with Nancy Waldron as co-hostess. Cathy White will give the program.
