Tekoa Trail
contest for kids
Tekoa Trail and Trestle Association (TTTA) is sponsoring a “Christmas Trail and Trestle” contest for all Tekoa area children on the subject of the John Wayne Pioneer Trail.
Participants will vye for a top prize of $100 awarded for the best art project, poem or research report on the theme of the Tekoa Trestle or John Wayne Pioneer Trail.
Entries must be submitted to the Tekoa High School Library by 8 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1. Entries will be judged by the officers of the TTTA based on creativity, completeness and respect for subject. Winners will be announced Thursday, Dec. 15. Second place prize is $75 and third place $50.
Entries will be on display at the Tekoa High School Library.

Tree of Lights, rite
set in Colfax Dec. 7
The Hospice Tree of Lights and Remembrance Ceremony will be Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 5:30 p.m. in the Norma McGregor Community Room at the Colfax Library.
The ceremony pays tribute to those we have lost through music, readings and special ornaments bearing their names. The Tree of Lights remains lit in the library throughout the holiday season.

Retired teachers
Whitman County retired teachers, Washington State School Retirees Association, met at the home of Martin and Linda Marler Nov. 15 for their harvest luncheon. Cast members from the Colfax High School musical “Oklahoma!” entertained. Lauren Claassen, Kyle Appel, Sara Whelchel and Darien Ward, dressed in their costumes and sang three numbers.
At their business meeting, Don Kackman reported on items of interest during the next state legislature. Teacher grant committee members Penny Bettas and Lu Luhring presented their recommendations for awarding grants to active classroom teachers in Whitman County. Grants awarded were more than $2,000.
WSSRA members are active and retired teachers, administrators and support personnel who serve or are serving in Washington state public schools. Teacher grants are given by the local unit to support out-of-pocket expenses that teachers incur when providing for the needs of their students.
