Colton 1B boys: Colton, Gar/Pal meet Friday

Pomeroy’s Oscar Morfin considers options at Colton Dec. 9. The Pirates pulled out an overtime win after Colton’s Grant Kinzer put-back his own deep shot to tie in regulation.

The Garfield/ Palouse boys are at the top of the Southeast 1B league basketball standings after first league games were played last weekend.

The Vikings are 1-0 league, 3-1 overall, while Pomeroy is also 1-0 in league with a 2-1 overall record. Oakesdale is at 0-1, 2-3 overall. Colton is 0-1 in league, 0-3 overall, after an overtime loss to Pomeroy Dec. 9. Touchet and St. John/Endicott have not played league games.

Several games were cancelled across the league Dec. 10 on account of snow.

Pomeroy 52, Colton 51 (OT)

Brady Chadwick took the inbound pass but quickly lost the handle. The ball bounced to Grant Kinzer, ticking under five seconds.

Kinzer, a senior guard, dribbled just past half-court in the center of the floor and took the shot.

Colton trailed by two points to Pomeroy in the first league game for both in the 2016-17 season.

Kinzer's shot bounced clean off the backboard. Running after it, Kinzer leapt, took the rebound in the air and made a lay-up as the buzzer sounded.

The game went to overtime, but Pomeroy pulled it out, led by Jacob Tewalt's 14 points on the night and Ryan Wolf's 12. Oscar Morfin's two free throws at the end of overtime sealed the game for the Pirates.

Colton's Reece Chadwick, a sophomore off the bench, led the Wildcats with 16 points while Kinzer added 11 points and nine rebounds. Brady Chadwick had nine points and 11 rebounds. Matt Wolf added four assists.

“I think we played a lot better than last weekend,” said Colton coach Nick Simons.

The Wildcats were set to play again the next night, Dec. 10, but a game at Touchet was canceled due to snow. It has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Colton will now play at Garfield/Palouse Friday, looking to contain big man Mason Bates and his average 15 points per game.

“We're gonna throw a couple of different things at them,” Simons said.

Garfield/Palouse 61, Oakesdale 54

A 22-point night from Bates was key to a comeback win at Oakesdale Dec. 9.

Ely Hawkins added 12 points and Erik Anderson 10 for the Vikings, along with 11 rebounds.

Garfield/Palouse trailed by five points at the start of the fourth quarter.

Cal Gregory lead Oakesdale with 17 points, while Kieron Anderson added 10 and Jacob Himes 9.

Wellpinit 73, St. John/Endicott 40

Adam Blakeley scored 18 points to lead the Eagles (0-1 league, 0-3 overall) in a non-league loss Tuesday night. Brandon Flett led the Redskins with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Cedric Bowen added 15 points for Wellpinit.
