County grapplers roll to Liberty meet

Colfax and Garfield/Palouse wrestlers are scheduled to head for Liberty today for a NE league meet after competing in back-to-back tournaments during the Christmas break. Friday the team entered the Freeman Winter Classic which had a lineup of 17 teams topped by big-school teams in the Spokane and north Idaho areas.

Colfax scored 17 team points in a meet which saw University of Spokane Valley win with 194 team points. Deer Park finished second, just one point behind University, and host Freeman finished third with 149 points.

Colfax was the lone team from the NE league team in the lineup.

Travis Knauff of GP placed third in the 152-pound class, and Nolan Burrill placed sixth in the 106 class.

The Colfax/GP contingent went to Freeman after wrestling the day before at the big Pomeroy Christmas Tournament, where they placed ninth with 68 points.

Clarkston's Bantams took the meet with 209 team points. Potlatch wrestlers finished fourth with 106 points, and Pullman finished fifth with 103.

Dane Hall of Colfax placed third in the 152 class after wrestling Travis Knauff of GP in the consolation final. Both were bumped into the consolation bracket after losing their second match. Hall won the team showdown with a 4-2 decision. Knauff placed fourth.

Chris Jones finished fourth in 145 after losing to the weight class winner, Frankie Zumwalt of Grangeville, in the second round.

Also placing for the local entry were Burrill, fourth in the 106 class at 2-2; Garrett Phillips (GP), fifth at 113 with a 1-2; Joey Rogers (GP), sixth at 126 with a 1-2, and Augie Allenbach, sixth at 220 with a 1-3 mark.
