New Little Library opens

Whitman County Library staffer Debi Hergert braves the elements to keep the Free Little Library on Cedar Street stocked.

Funded by the Friends of Whitman County Library, the new mini library was designed by Jan Hansen and her company, The Little Library Builder of Spokane. It replaces a structure that was developed and built by WSU Design and Construction Management students. That little library was extremely popular with neighborhood residents but experienced many problems, eventually disintegrating from the weather and outdoor elements.

The new little library is designed in the style of the Colfax Branch Library with similar detailing such as a rock wall, farming sculpture and sky-high windows. The Colfax Main Street library was designed by renowned Spokane architect Warren Heylman. Library officials have plans to add the facility to the National Register of Historic Places.
