Colfax girls defeat NWC, WC

Colfax sophomore Rachel Brown goes up for a shot over Wilbur/Creston's Ireland Corrigan during Colfax's win on the home boards Saturday. Josie Riebold is at right for Colfax.

Abbie Miller puts up a shot in front of Wilbur/Creston's Karlee Maioho in the Saturday league game at Colfax.

Colfax girls booked two wins in NE rounds over the weekend with a comeback win at Northwest Christian Friday and a strong win over the Wilbur/Creston Wildcats on the home court Saturday. The wins move the Bulldogs to 6-1 in overall league play.

Against a tough Northwest Christian team, the Bulldogs struggled to a 23-23 tie in the first half and then exploded for 38-21 in the second half on the way to a 61-44 win.

"We attacked," coach Corey Baerlocher said. "We were very aggressive going down the court."

He explained Colfax girls allowed the Crusaders to set up their offense and do business in the first half, but did not oblige in the second half.

The Bulldogs used a press defense, mixed in some zone and had most of their success with a half-court set.

Piper Cai hit 11 of her 13 points in the second half, and Carmen Gfeller hit 11 of 20 beans in the second.

Gfeller grabbed 11 rebounds against the Crusaders and totaled four assists. Greta Geier had four rebounds and three assists. Cai finished with five steals. Colfax shot 44 percent from the field.

Saturday on the home court Colfax went up against a small but quick team from Wilbur/Creston. The Bulldogs had trouble getting into gear for the first minutes of the game, but they soon picked up traction for the 51-29 win.

"I think we had a lot more even scoring, and we had more production from our guards which is something we need to do," Baerlocher said.

Colfax hit 50 percent of its two-point shots against the Wildcats, but they hit zero for 11 from three-point range.

Sophomore Taylre Sakamoto-Howell finished with eight points for her best game to date.

The Wildcats were led by senior guard Karlee Maioho who hit 11 of 13 from the toss line. Maioho's speed attracted the fouls, and she collected most of the WC points.

For the home game Saturday against Davenport, Colfax girls will play the first game, set for 4:30, and the boys will play the second game.
