Colfax boys target breakout vs. Dragons

Jared Kneale powers up a shot Saturday against A.J. Floyd of Davenport in the first half of Saturday's NE clash.

Colfax boys will aim to break out of a three-way tie at second place in the NE league race Friday night when they host the St. George's Dragons for another NE league round. Colfax, St. George's and Liberty are all tied in the league at 7-2 behind Northwest Christian, which extended its NE win string to 10-0 after a 62-44 win over Liberty Tuesday.

Bulldog coach Reece Jenkin rates NWC as the power team of the league and sees Colfax and possibly three other teams in the hunt to finish behind the Crusaders.

Colfax over the weekend pulled out a 59-51 win over Mary Walker at Springdale Friday and came home Saturday to dominate a young Davenport Gorilla team 61-33.

Jenkin said the round at Springdale seemed like a NE playoff game with back and forth action on each possession. Colfax nailed the win with an 18-11 charge in the final frame.

Carson Cloaninger, who led Colfax scoring with 21 at Springdale, hit eight beans in that last period. Senior Danny Robinson, who was the object of a stacked defense by the Chargers, also hit a key threebie.

"We just had the clutch plays when we needed them," Jenkin said.

Saturday on the home boards Colfax stacked a 15-3 lead over a young Gorilla team. The visitors came to life and played Colfax even in the second quarter, but after the break the Bulldogs hammered out a 25-4 edge in the third quarter to decide it.

Lone senior on the Davenport team is 5'7'' guard Chase Van Pevernage. Top scorer for the Gorillas was Jay Burt, a 6'1'' sophomore who hit 10 points.

Robinson, who finished with 17, hit three treys for the night.

Davenport also hit just 4-for-13 off the toss line and sustained a technical on the bench.

After colliding with St. George's here Friday, the Bulldogs will make the long trip to Kettle Falls to play the K-dogs.
