Colfax student representatives saluted the Colfax School Board Monday on Board Appreciation Night at the high school library. The presentation included symbolic gift bags, a digital slide show and a song performance by “Oklahoma!” co-stars Kyle Appel and Lauren Claussen.

“You can see we all enjoy what we do, and that's why we all look so young,” Superintendent Jerry Pugh said to laughter.

After the half-hour presentation, introduced by Principal Carrie Lipe, Colfax High principal, the board convened its regular meeting.

Pugh began by introducing a new high school secretary, Nicole Wells.

Pugh then read a statement by Governor Jay Inslee on School Board Recognition Month (January) followed by the formal election of new Colfax board Chairman David Nails – along with Vice Chair Jennifer Hauser. She had served previously as chair.

The superintendent then took the board through two Washington State School Directors Association resolutions: No. 492 To Approve the Study and Survey and No. 493 To Certify Non-Availability of School Facilities. He introduced three WSSDA policies for second reading: No. 2005 School Improvement Plans, No. 2024 Online Learning (revision) and No. 2104 Federal and/or State-Funded Special Instructional Programs (revision).

Pugh then announced March 2-3 as a full and half-day snow day makeup.

A short discussion followed about winter-weather delays.

From the audience, Marie Becker thanked Pugh for an “outstanding job” on deciding when and if to delay school.

On winter mornings, the superintendent and Transportation Supervisor Craig McCully check county and state highway reports and drive roads at 3:30 a.m. to see local bus route conditions firsthand.

“Craig goes one direction, I go the other,” said Pugh.

They reconvene at the school and go over what they know. Then the superintendent makes the decision.

“Our goal is to make that call by 5:15 a.m.,” he said.

The meeting concluded with the superintendent introducing four WSSDA policies for first reading by the board: No. 2025 Copyright Compliance, No. 2025P Procedure Copyright Compliance, No. 2027 District Ownership of Staff-Created Work and No. 2027P Procedure District Ownership of Staff-Created Work.
