Charles L. Burgess

Charles Leroy Burgess, 81, formerly of Ontario, Ore., died Feb. 1, 2017, at the home of his daughter in Palouse. A memorial service will be held in Ontario, Ore., at a later date. He will be cremated in accordance with his request.

Born Feb. 5, 1935, in Falls City, Neb., to Charles Leon Burgess and Rosa Clark Burgess, he was the fourth of seven children. He attended school at Richardson County, Neb., through the eighth grade. The family traveled a fruit harvest route through California. He joined the U.S. Army in December 1957 and was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., and Hot Springs, Ark., and received an honorable discharge in November 1963. While in Hot Springs, he met Delores Ann Lawler, and they were married July 25, 1959. The family lived in Paragould, Ark., and he worked for the Paragould Music Company stocking, cleaning, repairing and emptying cigarette vending machines, pinball machines and jukeboxes.

The family moved to Oregon in 1970. He worked many different places in and around Ontario for next 30 years.

In 1984, he and Ann separated. His daughter, Terrie, moved him to Palouse, and he lived in an adult family home in Palouse for nine months, then moved to a nursing center in Colfax.

Surviving are a son, Charles Lee (Ginger) of Dardanelle, Ark., his daughter, Terrie (Steve) Teare, Palouse; his daughter Bobbie (Rob) Harrod, Ontario; adopted twins Kasey Cross, Rexburg, Idaho, and Lacey Cross, Wright City, Mo .; 20 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; sister Lorena Eichthaler, Bridgeport, Neb .; brother Virgil (Frances), Fruitland, Idaho; sister Roxie McKillip, Sydney, Neb .; brother Ronald, Nampa, Idaho, and brother Lyle (Becky) Adrian, Ore. He was preceded in death by his companion of 13 years, Cindy Cross.

Suggested memorials may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.

Kathy M. Gabel

The funeral service for Kathy M. Gabel, 68, resident of Colfax since 1984, will be Friday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse with Pastor Kathy Lee Kramer officiating. Mrs. Gabel died at her home last Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017.

Born Oct. 12, 1948, in LaGrande, Ore., to Marcus and Marjorie Davis Box, she attended schools in Craigmont, Idaho, where she graduated from Highland High School in 1966. She and David R. Gabel were married April 8, 1968, at Wallace, Idaho.

The family moved to Colfax from Spokane in 1984, and he was the proprietor of Dave's Auto Electric. They later separated, and Mr. Gabel died in 2005.

She was a volunteer at the Thrifty Grandmothers' shop and the food bank.

She met Bill Dix in 1990, and they have been together since. He and his daughter, Lynn, reside in Colfax.

Surviving are sons, David (Bonnie) Gabel and Ric Gabel; daughter Marjorie (Keven) Phippen, all of Colfax; brother William Box of Boise; sisters Marian Basil, Pinehurst, Idaho; Marcia Redman, Kuna, Idaho; Carroll Gabel, Colfax; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Hazel Hill Olson

Hazel Marie Hill Olson, 96, died at Garfield Feb. 4, 2017. In accordance with her request, a funeral service will not be conducted. She will be buried at Deary, Idaho, next to her deceased husband, Oscar.

Born in the family home in Winona, Idaho, Dec. 12, 1920, she was raised in Lewis County, Idaho, and was salutatorian of the 1938 class at Nezperce High School. She graduated with a teaching degree from the Normal School in Lewiston in 1942. Her first teaching experience was at Hart School north of Craigmont, where she taught all eight grades and earned $80 per month. She met Oscar Olson while working at Potlatch Forest logging camp. They were married Nov. 12, 1942.

They moved to the Olson family farm west of Deary, Idaho, in 1943. During World War II, the family moved to Renton to work for Boeing, and she became a “Rosie the Riveter.” After the war, they moved back to the farm at Deary, and she taught in Deary and Bovill until 1983.

She earned a degree in education from the University of Idaho in 1970 and a master’s degree in 1971.

Following the death of Oscar in 1985, she moved to the Sonary Crest community in Clarkston, where she enjoyed activities, travel and hosting “Grandma Camp” for her 10 grandsons in the summers. Her last years were spent near family at LaDow Court in Garfield.

Surviving are her children Rich (Judy) Olson, Keith (Rhonda) Olson, David (Patricia) Olson and Carla Olson; 12 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a stepson, Jerry, and granddaughter, Peggy.

Wanda Roper

Funeral services for Wanda J. Roper, 88, resident of Garfield for most of her life, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at the Garfield Christian Church with Pastor Dean Walker officiating.

Private family graveside services will be later at the Garfield Cemetery.

Mrs. Roper died Feb. 3, 2017.

She was born Nov. 21, 1928, in Garfield to Roy and Dorothy Wiseman Timm. After her mother died when she was two, her father married Katherine Cottrill, and four more children were added to the family for a total of eight children. She grew up in Garfield and graduated from Garfield High School in 1946.

She married Charles F. Roper June 3, 1947, and the couple made their home on the family farm at Garfield.

She worked for Washington State University in the Rotunda Dining Hall for many years and retired. She also worked for the JE Love Company, Dot's Tavern and Cher's Café. She enjoyed playing pool at Grumpy's in Garfield, dancing, playing bingo and all sorts of card games.

She has resided in Oakesdale for the last 10 years.

Surviving are her sons Charles Jr., Roger, Douglas, Bruce and Steven, a daughter Dawna Chappell; two sisters, Donna Kottke and Agnes Palmer, 22 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Memorial contributions in Wanda's honor suggested to Oakesdale Presbyterian Church.
