Enemies can be helpful. Both focus and inspiration can come from facing off a known enemy. It can concentrate effort.

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union and its Communist ideology were the enemy.

It motivated the country to do many things. Some were good. Some, such as befriending totalitarian, anti-democratic governments, were not good.

Still, the nation’s energies were concentrated on its single biggest and most threatening enemy.
