The Town of Oakesdale has opened a public comment period for input on a permit application for work at Pearl Street, McCoy Street and First Street. The comment period is open through Feb. 24.
The work will include reconstruction of sections of the streets near Oakesdale schools, reducing the grade of the Second Street hill and widening the loading and unloading area for buses.
Other proposed changes include relocating and lowering water and sewer mains, sidewalks, constructing retaining walls and a storm water system.
“The main thing is the safety of the students,” said Oakesdale Mayor Dennis Palmer about what spurred the project.
The estimated work would affect Pearl Street from Second Street to First Street; First Street from Pearl Street to McCoy Street, and McCoy Street from First Street to Second Street.
Oakesdale received a grant in the amount of $930,400 from the Transportation Improvement Board in November 2015.
After the public comment period concludes, the town expects to go out to bid at the end of February for construction this summer.
“It'll happen right after school's out, in mid-June,” said Palmer.
The grant is expected to cover the total cost of the work.
Comments may be sent to Town of Oakesdale, Box 246, 105 North First Street, Oakesdale, 99158.
