Jennings demos, surplus sale, baseball okay top board meet

First graders Bodee Horton and Colton Nebe show that raisins float up and down in Sprite.

Second graders Ty Scott and Ashley Morgan quiz the school board.

The Colfax School Board met in the library of Jennings Elementary Monday night to hear from students in a presentation before its regular meeting.

A pair of representatives from each each class spoke to the board; from kindergartners informing them that snakes have venom to older students demonstrating that raisins float up and down in Sprite due to gases.

After the presentations, Jennings Principal Travis Howell talked about various staff committees at the school and their activities.

During the board's regular meeting, representatives approved an arrangement with LaCrosse School District to allow for its students to play in the Colfax schools' baseball program this season. An arrangement with Oakesdale for baseball is already in effect.

The board then approved a list of district surplus items, which will now be sent out to Educational Service District 101 to be listed for two weeks.

Any remaining items will be set for public bid March 31 in the Colfax High School vocational shop.

Superintendent Jerry Pugh and staff have been working on the list since January.

Items range from a 2003 school bus to a brand new meat slicer to stacks of old yearbooks.

“This list will get smaller as we go,” said Pugh. “We went through every nook and cranny in the district.”

The board will meet again on March 27.
