Fighting Sail class at library
“The Age of the Fighting Sail, a Naval History” presented by Gonzaga history professor Steve Balzarini will come to the Colfax library in a two part series Wednesdays, March 15 and 22, from 6:30-7:45 p.m. Early registration is suggested.
Balzarini’s class will review the nature and conduct of naval warfare during the Revolution and Napoleonic Age. He will focus on the leadership of the British Royal Navy, the tactics of ship to ship engagement, the overall British strategy in the wars against the French and the life of the ordinary seaman aboard a British warship during this period.
This class is offered by Community Colleges of Spokane through their ACT 2 program. Register by calling CCS at 509-279-6030 or at any branch of Whitman County Library. Cost of the class is $7.
Guardian Angel plans 37th St. Pat's party
Guardian Angel St. Boniface School in Colton will present its 37th annual St. Patrick's Party March 18 at Colton Gun Club. The steak and wine dinner benefit includes an auction, casino and hourly drink specials.
Dinner will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with barbecued steak, 16-item salad bar, roll, baked potato, dessert and wine or beer for $30. The casino runs from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. with the bar open from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
A live auction will take place from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. featuring travel, golf and hunting packages, limousine wine tours, Gonzaga basketball, WSU and University of Idaho sports, pot of gold package and other items.
Class to benefit Colfax Food Pantry
The Colfax Food Panty will benefit from a special yoga class presented on Tuesday, March 7, at 5:30 p.m. at the Colfax library. Called “Yoga for a Cause”, food or cash donations are being accepted for the pantry and no class fees will be charged.
This yoga class and others at the library are led by local instructors Suzy McNeilly and Crystn Guenthner. They are designed for all levels and abilities.
M. Willey band to play at Dahmen
The Moses Willey band from Spokane will perform at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown March 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. They form a special place where the lines between Traditional Bluegrass, Folk and Appalachian combine together in a mix of stylistic and idiosyncratic interpretations.
Their 2016 self-titled album features eight original songs. Their sound has been described as ranging from "high energy” and "hard-driving” to "hauntingly beautiful". Members are Michael Lee Hicks - mandolin; Alyssa Hersey - fiddles and vocals; Clayton Lee – guitar and vocals; Don Saladin – banjo, and Tony Farris – bass. http://www.moseswilley.com
Quick scrapbooking slated at Dahmen
The last in the Wild Women Winter Art Series will be at the Dahmen Barn Sunday, March 12, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The topic is Quick Interactive Scrapbook with Moscow artist Andrea Chavez. Students are asked to bring their own paper bag of choice. The best kinds for this work are the ones sold at Michael's or other craft stores, but even a small bag from the grocery store will work for demonstration. If students can bring their own scissors and paper cutter, that will help. All other items will be supplied.
Chavez is a self-taught crafter from Moscow. She dabbles in many crafts such as kitchen crafts, paper, beading and needle crafts and has recently begun watercolor painting and drawing. The cost of the class is $35 plus a $5 materials fee paid to the instructor the day of the class.

GarPal FFA plans dinner, auction
The third annual benefit auction and dinner for Garfield/Palouse FFA will March 10. Steak dinner will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and the silent auction will start at 7 with live auction at 7:30. Tickets cost $15 before the event or $20 at the door.
Advance tickets are $15 and available at the school.
Two workshops set for children
at Dahmen Barn
Two resident artists at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown will host workshops for children during the month of March.
On March 11, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Christie Zeoli will lead a culinary arts class for kids ages 5 and older in which they will make mac and cheese from scratch. The class is a combination of hands-on and demonstration. Kids will do the measuring and combining of ingredients. The instructor will demonstrate grating cheese, emphasizing safety. When the dish is complete, kids will feast on the results. Minimum number of kids is 5 and maximum is 12. Cost of this workshop is $15.
On March 18, from 10 a.m. to noon, resident artist Donna Baker will instruct children aged 6 to 10 in the basic steps of drawing a horse or a small animal such as a dog or cat by using simplified forms and shapes. The class fee of $20 includes the materials for this topic.
Donna has been a professional artist for more than 20 years. She has enhanced her ability as an artist by taking a variety of classes from world renowned artists.
Herblock exhibit
now at library
The Herblock traveling exhibit, featuring 24 panels displaying reproductions of the work of legendary Washington Post editorial cartoonist Herbert L. Block, is now on display at the Colfax Library. Produced by The Herb Block Foundation and crafted by Curator Harry Katz, the exhibit presents Herblock’s effort to defend the rights and freedoms of Americans through his political cartoons.
The traveling exhibit will be at the library through March 26 and can be viewed during regular library hours.
Born October 13, 1909, in Chicago, Block began his editorial cartooning career at the Chicago Daily News and NEA Service before landing at The Washington Post in 1946. His work was an exercise in freedom of speech, freedom of the press and equality.
Illustrated brochures accompany the exhibit and are available at the library.

Chapter AF met Feb. 27 at Peace Lutheran Church with Karen Groom as hostess and Queenie Leinweber as co-hostess. Seventeen members responded to roll call by stating their favorite spring flower.
An invitation was read from Chapter AE Palouse for the S.E. Reciprocity meeting March 25.
Tina Scholz read her president's letter. Ann Mara gave a program on the Dahmen Barn and its acquisition, development, continued growth and prosperity. A colored brochure was handed out to those present.
The next scheduled meeting will be March 11 at Peace Lutheran Church with Joann Wood hosting.
Pullman LWV
Pullman League of Women Voters March 6 program at Umpqua Bank at 6:30 p.m. will be "Modern Day Debtor's Prisons," a topic of interest and importance presented by WSU Global Scholars who will discuss economic discrimination in the criminal justice system. The scholars team researched the subject, prepared information to present on the issue and won the sixth annual WSU Global Case Competition April 8, 2016. Winning sent them to Geneva, Switzerland, last November to present the material and their solutions to the United Nations there.

Pullman Chamber of Commerce March general membership luncheon topic will be “Community Transformations - Three initiatives which are transforming our community“.
Francis Benjamin will speak on Palouse Knowledge Corridor’s “Be The Entrepreneur Bootcamp”; Garren Shannon will present on Pullman2040; and John Johnson will cover the Town Gown Collaborative.
The luncheon will begin at noon on Tuesday, March 14, at Gladish Community & Cultural Center. Lunch will be catered by the Hilltop, and the cost is $15 per person, or $12 for chamber members. Please RSVP by March 10.
