Serving Whitman County since 1877
Spring is in the air, and that means golf. The St. John Ladies League is gearing up for the annual Pig Putt tournament at the St. John Golf & County Club. The group met last week to work out the plans for the tournament.
The 21st annual Pig Putt will be Sunday, April 30, and it is the league's only fundraiser. Funds will go toward the league account.
“We do all the maintenance on the clubhouse and just anything that's needed,” said Lydia Smith, one of the organizers. “The last big project was the kitchen. We replaced the counter tops, and since then, it's been used a lot more.”
Smith noted the country club is typically used as a community space, with several birthday parties, receptions and gatherings held there.
The tournament is open to the public and to all ages.
“A lot of families come and play together,” said Smith, noting youngsters are allowed in the tournament.
Teams of up to four can participate on the 18-hole course, and registration is $25 per person.
“It's strictly a fun tournament. There is some money paid out, but it's not a lot and we're there for fun,” said Smith.
The golf tournament coincides with the annual St. John Stock Show weekend, too.
“It's a fun weekend all around,” said Smith.
There will be a raffle and prizes as well, and prizes are still to be determined. Hot dogs will also be served.
Registration will be day of beginning at 9 a.m. Tee off is slated for 10 a.m.
