Colfax baseball tops Liberty twice

Colfax opened the NE league campaign with two wins over Liberty Friday in games which were moved to WSU's Bailey-Brayton Field. The Bulldogs took the opener 9-1 and then took the second game 12-5 with a nine-run charge in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The wins leave Colfax at 3-1 on the season with a tough test Saturday when they are slated to play at Asotin for the first league baseball test between the two foes.

Prior to Friday's Liberty games, Colfax pegged a 10-0 shutout over Grangeville and sustained a 1-4 loss to Colton in their only action to date.

Friday in the first game senior veteran Danny Robinson threw a six hitter on the way to the 9-1 win. Robinson struck out nine Lancers and allowed zero walks.

Colfax moved to an early lead with three runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Colfax rapped nine hits with Robinson hitting 2-4 with a homer, and Parker Huber also tagging a homer, Cal Gregory and Kyle Appel each hit 3-4 on the day with a double. Kieran Anderson also doubled. Robinson, Gregory and Appel each had two RBIs in the first game.

In the second game, the Lancers stacked a 5-1 lead after five innings. They scored three in the fourth inning on two Colfax errors and a walk.

Lone Colfax score until the fifth came in the second inning with Appel, Matt Sharp and Hunter Mosebar linking hits.

Colfax scored two more runs in the fifth to get within two runs of the Lancers, and then blasted six runs in the sixth to take control.

The charge started when Colfax drew three walks off Liberty's reliever.

Sharp rapped a single with the bases loaded, and Gregory tagged a triple to score the last three runs.

Colfax starter Huber fanned six Lancers and allow five hits over the first five innings. Gregory pitched the last two innings, struck out one batter and allowed just one hit.

Colfax Coach Mike Parrish credited Liberty's starting pitcher with containing the Colfax bat attack in the second game. Under a new WIAA rule, pitchers this year are limited by the number of pitches instead of innings and Colfax bats ignited after the Lancers' starter had to leave the game.

After Saturday's trip to Asotin, the Bulldogs are scheduled to play the next three games on the road with a non-leaguer at Colton Monday and then a league doubleheader against the Broncos at Ritzville Friday.
