Veteran Colton team begins state defense

The defending state champion Colton High School baseball team is off to a 5-1 start, including non-league wins Tuesday in Moses Lake over Royal and Cascade of Leavenworth.

The team returns all but one player from last year – 2016 graduate Carter Dahmen.

Back for 2017 is Grant Kinzer, a four-year starter who led the Southeast 1B league in hitting last year. Brady Chadwick, another senior, is back on the mound, a fifth-year starter for the Wildcats. He started at shortstop as an eighth-grader.

Other returning pitchers include Reece Chadwick, Cameron Bean and Nick Schultheis.

At catcher is Peter Schultheis, a senior and fourth-year starter.

New freshmen on the roster include utility player Jon Bean, outfielder Chris Wolf, first base/pitcher Jackson Meyer and middle infielder Kieran Anderson.

The team has begun the season in the gym and on the field.

“It's been alright,” said Coach Pat Doumit. “The weather's affected everybody. Our guys have been good about taking what's presented to them.”

Through six games, sophomore Luke Vining has been a consistent hitter, with junior Cameron Bean also delivering key hits at the top of the lineup.

“Reece Chadwick has really shown his offensive potential,” Doumit said.

Playing at Moses Lake Tuesday, opening against Royal, Colton won 3-1.

“Brady pitched a gem,” Doumit said of Chadwick's stat line of seven innings, 11 strikeouts and no walks.

In the day's second game, against Cascade, Reece Chadwick hit a two-run home run to begin a 12-2 route.

Cameron Bean pitched, going five innings for eight groundouts, two strikeouts and one walk.

Colton plays next on Monday at home vs. Colfax.
