Gar/Pal drops game to Pomeroy

Pomeroy’s Hogan Heytvelt eyes the situation from the mound as Gar/Pal’s Evan Weagraff leads off first base, guarded by Cort LaMunyan. Pomeroy won the game 10-2.

Garfield/Palouse freshman Blake Jones works the mound April 22 in Garfield.

The young Garfield/Palouse baseball team was even younger last Saturday in a 10-2 home loss to Pomeroy.

Playing at Garfield, with added fence to mark off standing water on the right field line, the Vikings were without their one senior, catcher Mason Bates, who kept score with a sprained wrist he injured the week before against Touchet.

Saturday's loss put the Vikings record at 5-8 (3-5 in league).

The team, with just two juniors on the roster of 12, is making its way with youth.

“Our inexperience has showed a couple times,” said coach Jim Stewart.

Freshman Blake Jones started on the mound against Pomeroy (13-1 overall, 7-0 league), pitching four-and-two-thirds innings with five strikeouts and two walks. Evan Weagraff, a junior, threw the last two innings for five strikeouts and one walk.

The Vikings got hits from Weagraff, Jones and Riley Pederson.

Jones has boosted the 2017 team, along with his brother, Austin, an eighth-grader who also starts.

“Wherever he's needed,” said Stewart. “Second base, third base, outfielder.”

Gar/Pal will play next on April 29 at home against Liberty junior varsity, then at home vs. Colton May 2.
