The St. John/Endicott Dollars for Scholars Foundation plans a shred truck service in St. John at the corner of Front and Main streets on Saturday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“People are welcome to bring their shreddable items,” said Marlene Landers, foundation manager.
The foundation brought a shred truck to St. John for the first time last year, and Landers said the event was a success.
“A lot of people cleaned out,” she commented.
The shred truck does not have a set price, but the foundation will accept donations to benefit its Spark Fund.
“We aren't charging, but people are welcome to donate if they are so inclined,” said Landers.
The Spark Fund benefits students to allow them to attend academically-based events relating to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (S.T.E.A.M.) The fund was established a year ago with an initial $2,000 investment by the foundation that was raised at the 20th anniversary dinner for the foundation in May of 2015. Donations to the fund are welcome to keep it stocked so that students can receive awards on an as-needed basis.
“We didn't get anything last year other than the money from the shred truck,” said Landers. “We could fund entirely from the shred truck, but we'd like to build it up, too.”
There also were not any students who applied for an award from the Spark Fund, but Landers said the foundation has plans to market it again so that students are aware of the opportunity.
“We haven't had kids apply for this year, but we plan to talk to the teachers again and see if they can get the word out,” she said. “It is for academics, so we'll start with them. We're hoping it grows up.”
Landers said Jamie Misner of Endicott has volunteered to pick up shredding for Endicott area residents who cannot make it to St. John. Last year, Misner picked up items to shred from the Endicott school parking lot.
“She will actually go and pick up this year if people want it picked up,” said Landers. “She'll pick it up and bring it here.”
Call Misner at 509-657-3680 to arrange a pickup of items to be shred.
Those interested in donating directly to the Spark Fund can do so by mailing a check with a Spark Fund designation to:
