May Day fest in Garfield

The annual Garfield May Day celebration returns Saturday.

The day begins with the Boy Scout Breakfast from 6-10 a.m. at Garfield Elementary/Middle School followed by the “Troll Stroll” fun run at the park from 8-10 a.m. (check-in 7:15 a.m.). At 10:45 a.m., the kiddie costume parade will begin with prizes awarded to top three costumes. At 11 a.m., the Boy Scouts will present the flag and national anthem to start the main parade.

Featured will be the Garfield/Palouse marching band and new Garfield royalty; queen Hope Kriebel, a sophomore at Garfield/Palouse High School. Palouse royalty Emily Bagott and Emma Gregg will also walk in the parade along with younger children invited to accompany them.

Kriebel will be formally crowned Garfield queen at noon at the park, succeeding Victoria Welch.

Food will be available, including hamburgers from the Palouse Lions Club and Meet Shop Too. Also at the park will be various arts and crafts and other vendors, and for the kids, a bouncy castle and four-in-one game set.

At $1 per ticket, a raffle will be held for a 1/4-beef, cut and wrapped. All proceeds from the donated beef will go to the Garfield Community Association, to fund next year’s May Day.

At 3 p.m., a cornhole tournament will start at Grumpy’s Tavern followed by karaoke.

“We’re pretty set,” said Connie Kriebel, secretary/treasurer of Garfield Community Association, on Tuesday. “If the weather would cooperate we’ll be perfect.”
