Serving Whitman County since 1877
The extended candidate filing period, which concluded Wednesday, May 24, yielded nine more candidates.
Ben J. Wolf, an incumbent, filed the morning of Wednesday, May 24, to retain his seat as commissioner for Whitman County Fire District 14, which covers the Uniontown and Colton area. He was the last candidate to file.
The extended period allowed individuals to file for positions which did not have any candidates at the conclusion of the regular filing period on Friday, May 19. All together, there were nine filings in the extended period.
Sandra Arbini and Rhonda Anderson filed for the Albion Town Council position three seat, and Bruce Kenoyer III and Crystle Morgan filed for the position four seat in Albion. Those two-candidate contests will be on the November ballot.
Blaine Golden had filed during the regular period for the Colfax City Council position three seat. Crystal Christopherson also filed for that seat, and during the extended period last week Golden withdrew his candidacy for seat three and moved it to seat one, which did not have a candidate. Each of the four of the Colfax council seats drew just one candidate, so the Colfax council has already been decided.
In Colton, Laci Hubbard-Mattix filed for the council five seat that was previously held by James Dahman. She will run uncontested. Cap Perry filed in the extended period to retain his district three director position on the Oakesdale School Board, and Chuck Petras filed for the commissioner three position with Fire District Three.
In total, 184 offices were open for election, and 125 drew candidates.
Unfiled positions included Tekoa Park District positions one and three; five park positions each in LaCrosse, St. John and Oakesdale; one Garfield Park District position, three Hospital District Four seats; one cemetery position each in St. John, Oakesdale, Thornton and Garfield; three cemetery positions each in Endicott, Winona and Farmington; one commissioner position each in fire districts one, eight, 13 and 14; three commissioner positions in Fire District Two; two commissioner positions each in fire districts three, four, five and eight; one position each for the Rosalia, Colton and Lamont school districts; two Palouse City Council positions; one council seat in Malden, and four council positions in Lamont.
According the the county elections departments, current office holders will be allowed to remain in those seats until the next election round.
CORRECTION: Last week's Pullman primary story erroneously listed candidates Dan Records, Austin Brown, Troy Smith and Garren Shannon as ward three candidates for the seat currently held by Fritz Hughes, who is not running for re-election. The four candidates are actually running for the ward two seat held by Hughes. Ward three candidates are Jeff Hawbaker, incumbent, and Brandon Chapman.
