Oakesdale's volleyball team, which booked a repeat win of the 1B championship last November at Yakima's SunDome, was named the top girls team for the 1B, 2B and A divisions at the Youth Sports Awards ceremony Monday night in Spokane. The awards were presented at the Martin Woolson theater.
The Nighthawks took the 2016 1B title with a sweep of league foe Pomeroy in the championship game. The run to the return title included a win over undefeated Almira/Coulee/Hartline. They were coached by Brandi Brown to the league title.
The Nighthawk starters in the campaign included seniors Jacey Johnson and Lindsey Lindgren who completed their sports careers with the Nighthawks with a trophy presentation on the stage of the downtown theater in Spokane.
Oakesdale also had two juniors and two sophomores in the starting six.
In the 2015 title game, the Nighthawks also went up against league foe Pomeroy in the title game. Lone senior in the lineup for the Nighthawks on the 2015 team was Corynn Anderson.
Deer Park's boys cross country team, also two-year champions, won the boys award for the three small school divisions. Mead's wrestlers and its volleyball team won the awards for top male and female teams in the the three top classifications.
