Serving Whitman County since 1877
Karena Wilcox opened the Malden Market last month, and business has been successful for her. She recently set the summer hours after a test run.
Initially, she planned to be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays, and after starting out, she has made slight adjustments to be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays, Sundays and Mondays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
“You don’t know until you open,” she commented. “Friday and Saturdays are the days you need stuff, and Sundays people don’t come in until after church.”
Wilcox has been working on cleaning up the store and making displays, and she is now planning an official grand opening celebration Saturday, July 1. The day will be marked with a car show.
“I love car shows, and everybody out here loves car shows,” said Wilcox.
The car show has been named the First Annual Malden Free Show and Shine. It will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and classes include farm trucks, classic RVs, bicycles, tractors, motorcycles, foreign, hot rods, American classic, modified and patina. Additionally, youngsters can enter model entries and pinewood derby cars.
“So the kids can be involved,” said Wilcox.
There will be prizes for kids and in all of the categories. The list of activities for the days also includes an egg toss, three-legged race and bobbing for apples.
“I thought it’d be a great way to bring people to Malden,” said Wilcox. “And it’s going to benefit my business, too.”
Vendor spaces will be available for $15 or $25 with power. To sign up for a space, contact Wilcox at maldenmarket@yahoo.com.
