The 42nd Colfax Junior Rodeo went off last weekend at Palouse Empire Fairgrounds with 167 competitors vying to win a saddle as Top Cowboy and Top Cowgirl.
Competing across five divisions from ages 3-18, Dallen Duncan of Walla Walla -- in the age 8-under bracket -- was named Top Cowboy after taking first in barrel racing, goat flanking, poles, dummy roping and California stake-tying.
Rocksie Timentwa of Wilbur won Top Cowgirl, taking first in PeeWee girls' dummy roping and cal stake, and second in goat flanking, poles and calf-riding.
Top finisher for senior boys (ages 15-18) was Cameron Plaistad of Moses Lake, who took first in chute dogging. St. John's Lance Mills won calf-roping and Juan Montes of Othello took first in bullriding.
For senior girls, Krista Marchand of Omak was the top points winner, taking first in barrels, goat tying and steer daubing.
In the Intermediate division (ages 12-14), Logan Hollebeck of Othello was the top placer, taking first in California stake-tying and chute dogging.
For intermediate girls, Holly Gallaway of Spokane finished first in poles and steer daubing.
In the junior division (ages 9-11), Hunter Mussbaumer of Cheney led the boys, taking first in goat tying and second in barrels and poles. For the girls, Kassidy Bremner got first in poles and goat tying and took second in barrels.
In the Peewee division (age 8-under), Duncan was the top boy and Timentwa was the top girl.
The youngest competitors were seen in the Little People division (age 5-under). Libby Lyle of Colfax was the top placer for girls while Nate Herriman of Cheney led the boys.
For top local results, Sydney Berquist of LaCrosse finished first in intermediate girls' breakaway roping while Caleb Berquist, also LaCrosse, finished third in calf-roping for senior boys. Jordan Paddock of Colfax finished second in bullriding for senior boys and Jessica Lyle of Colfax took second for girls in the barrels.
Other competitors from Whitman County included Cody Inderrieden of Colfax in junior boys, Caden Inderrieden in PeeWee boys and Colton Nebe, Colfax, in Little People calf-riding; and Alyse Nebe in mutton busting – also the Little People division.
On Saturday night, after the junior rodeo concluded, an open-entry barrel race was held for a fundraiser. After 97 riders ran, the Junior Rodeo Association raised $1,388 to put on next year's rodeo. Pamela Capper of Cheney, a National Finals Rodeo qualifier in 2016, clocked the fastest time, winning $600.
