William (Bill) Dawes, 86, former manager of LaCrosse Grain Growers, died June 10, 2017, of pancreatic cancer in Dayton. Mr. Dawes had made his retirement home in Waitsburg where he resided for the last 20 years.
Born to Lucille and Charles Dawes June 18, 1930, in Salem, Ore., he was raised in Beaverton, Ore., and graduated from Beaverton High School in 1948. He attended Oregon State College, now Oregon State University. When he was at LaCrosse in the '70s he could attend Beaver games in the press box where he helped Darrell Aune, the voice of the Beavers, keep statistics.
He and Shirley Schultz were married Oct. 26, 1950, in St. Helens, Ore., and he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve during the Korean War.
While working for Cargill terminal on Swan Island, he was approached by the manager to consider management and was asked to go to Colfax to work in their grain office in 1954. In 1957, he was hired as assistant manager at LaCrosse and became the manager a year later. He remained at LaCrosse until 1974 when he accepted a job at Blackfoot, Idaho, as the marketing manager for grains and potatoes. They moved to Walla Walla in 1975, and he eventually took a job with The Walla Walla Grain Growers and was employed there until he retired in 1997 and moved to Waitsburg. Mrs. Dawes died 2004.
He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Elks Lodge, Lions Club and the Presbyterian Church and enjoyed the outdoors, golfing and bowling. Skydiving became a passion with a birthday jump at the ages of 85 and 86.
Surviving are a daughter Cindy (Jeff) Shaw, Pilot Rock, Ore .; a son Terry (Debra) Dawes, Spokane; special friend of 13 years, Gwendoline Gerow; a sister, Janet Cunningham, Plano, Texas; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A private family service will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla June 24 .

A graveside service for Loren K. Garber, 74, will be Friday, June 23, at 10 a.m. at the Latah City Cemetery. The Rev. Don Cambra will officiate the service and Waverly F. & A. M. will participate. A gathering of friends and family will follow at the Spangle Service Club. Mr. Garber died June 18 at Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, from complications following heart surgery.
Born Aug. 8, 1942, at Spokane, to David H. and Helen E. Bohrnsen Garber, he attended grade school at Latah and graduated from Freeman High School in 1961. Following high school, he attended Eastern Washington University in Cheney and received a degree in accounting.
In 1965, he moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, where he worked at a pulp mill, a saw mill, on fishing boats and in law enforcement. In Ketchikan, he met Sandy Border and they were married July 17, 1970.
The couple lived in Davenport, Iowa, for two years, where he worked as an accountant and then returned to Latah where he farmed for eight years and drove semis for several years. He operated the Spangle Saloon from 1995 – 2002. His wife, Sandy, died in 2002. Loren semi-retired in 2010.
He was a member of the Waverly F. & A. M. Lodge and a true nature lover.
Survivors include his daughter, Shelly (Chad) Hansen of Farmington: two sisters, Louise (Dave) Enchansbe of Spokane, and Karen (Bruce) Hill of the Midwest; three grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

Donald Eugene White, 84, Colfax, died June 14, 2017, at The Courtyard in Colfax where he has resided for the last six years. A private family gathering is planned, and no formal services will be conducted.
Born April 19, 1933, in Pomeroy to Sammie and Gladys Hutchens White, he moved at age three with his family to the Green Hollow area near Colfax. He attended Martha Washington Grade School and Colfax High School. He was a Golden Glove boxing champion in his weight class. He graduated with the Colfax class of 1951, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served on the front lines in Korea with the 223 infantry regiment as commander of a jeep carrying a howitzer gun.
Honorably discharged as a sergeant, he returned to Colfax and farmed with his father at Green Hollow. He and Cleo Dial were married in 1956 and had two sons. They moved to Palouse in 1960 and farmed north of Kamiak Butte. They were later divorced, and he married Donna Bogus of Palouse in 1977.
An avid sports fan, he followed the Seahawks and WSU Cougar team. He attended the very first Super Bowl in Los Angeles in 1967. He was a member of the Colfax Elks, the VFW, Washington State Grange and a 63-year member of the American Legion.
His wife, Donna, died in June of 1999, and he moved into Colfax later that summer.
Surviving are two sons, Dennis and wife Greta of Endicott and Sammie White of Lewiston; a sister, Helen Feragen, Glendive, Mont., and grandchildren.
