The rundown on Elberton

Vern Sharp of Colfax discovered this information while sorting through some of the papers belonging to his mother, Roxie Sharp. She reported Garfield news for the Gazette for many years. The information was written by A.E. Irwin, one time Elberton City Clerk.

The town of Elberton was incorporated in 1896 with a population of 572. There were nine stores on the south side of town and six stores on the north side. Following is a list of the buildings in the town:

eight grocery and general merchandise stores, two drug stores, one hardware store (largest in the state), three barber shops, two blacksmith shops, one shoe shop, one photo gallery, one paint shop, one pool hall, one brick hotel with 50 rooms,

three rooming houses, two lodge halls, one dance hall, two churches, one bank, one post office, one creamery, one sawmill, one planing mill, one flour mill, one lumber yard,

two meat markets, a prune dryer (largest in the world at that time), one telephone exchange,

one saloon and two livery stables.

The grade and high school combined had a total of 205 pupils with 12 teachers.
