Endicott fire district receives FEMA grant

Whitman County Fire District 6 at Endicott was awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant June 23 for $111,905. The FEMA funds will be used to buy new turnout suits, breathing masks and tanks for the department. The grant specifies the money must be spent on fire-fighting equipment.

Keith Luft, District 6 chief, said the department’s current equipment is “all way out-dated.”

The fire district applied for the grant in January. Luft expects to get the new equipment sometime in the fall.

Fire District 6 provides coverage from Endicott west to the Adams County line, north to the Palouse River, east to the Thera area and south almost to Highway 26.

Luft said the department responds to about two or three structure fires a year.

According to its website, the FEMA grant program has helped departments obtain critically needed equipment since 2001.
