Posse marks 4-2 in wooden bat tourney

Pullman Posse wrapped up a campaign in the Spokane Wooden Bat tournament Monday with a 4-2 mark after losing 3-4 to the Yakima Valley Peppers. The 4-2 tournament run leaves Posse at 18-3 overall but still undefeated in the Spokane Legion league run at 11-0.

Next up for Posse will be three games in the Palouse summer series. They will play at WSU's Bailey-Brayton field today, Thursday at 9 a.m

They will be at Pullman High's Quann Field for a second time at 1 pm. Friday and then play back at Bailey-Brayton at noon Saturday.

After the three series games, Posse is slated to play their last league game against Gonzaga Prep at McDonald Park in Colfax at 11 a.m. July 11. They will play Chewelah for two non-league games the next day at Jackson Field before going into the district playoff.

Tuesday, Yakima Valley handed Posse their third defeat of the season with a 4-3 win. The Peppers' Kobe Kohls held the Posse bats to just three hits while striking out six and allowing just one walk.

Yakima pegged a 3-1 lead after two innings, and Posse tied it at 3-3 with two runs in the sixth. Yakima scored in the bottom of the sixth for the 4-3 decision.

Payton Kallaher doubled and Nate Akesson and Konner Kincaid singled for the three Posse hits.

Sunday, Posse blanked Hermiston 14-0 in the Spokane show with Hogan Heytvelt of Pomeroy throwing a four-hitter at the Oregon team. He struck out six and allowed just one walk.

Posse scored the 14 runs off seven hits against four different pitchers.

Akesson scored three runs and booked three RBIs. Kyle Appel, Konner Kinkade, and Heytvelt all singled. Posse batters were allowed 11 walks in the in the five-inning game.

Saturday, Posse dropped Meridian of Idaho 9-1 in their first game and then lost a 11-12 zinger to Ferris.

Against the Idaho team, Posse totaled 13 hits. Appel, Kallaher and Jackson Horner each singled and doubled. Grady Benton and Jeff Marlow doubled and Jake Wells had two singles.

In the second game, Ferris scored a run in the bottom of the extra eighth inning to break an 11-11 tie. Coach Mike Kinkade used four pitchers against the Saxons.

Posse out-hit Ferris 17-13 with Heytvelt tagging three singles and Zane Wilson, Ryan Wolf, Konner Kinkade, Akesson, Ryan Wolf and Grady Benten each rapping two singles.

Posse started the campaign Friday with two shutouts. They bested Walla Walla 8-0 and Olympia 10-0. Both games shut down after five innings. Posse ace Jake Wells allowed Walla Walla just one hit while fanning seven batters.

Nathan Akesson rapped a single, double and triple, and Appel tagged two singles and a double. Kallaher and Wells each added a double and Benton tagged two singles.

In the 10-0 shutout of the Olympians, Kallaher allowed two hits and struck out three batters.

Posse had seven hits with Heytvelt rapping a two-run triple and Appel hitting two singles. Wilson tripled and Kinkade doubled.
