Hen House Chicks set up in new spot

The Hen House Chicks store in Colfax has found a new nest.

A vintage and vintage-inspired furniture and home décor business, which was in the S. 100 block of Main Street for 11 years, moved north to what was formerly the banquet room of Events On Main. The store opened at the new site July 13.

The search for a new location originally stemmed from a frozen city water meter that broke at the previous site in January. With the ensuing flooded basement, the store was without heat and hot water.

After months like this, the cost of two space heaters added up and the location had no air conditioning.

“We had a new opportunity with Events On Main,” said Sandi Cochran, who co-owns Hen House Chicks with her sister-in-law Nancy Cochran.

The store closed at its original site in June, and the Cochrans began to pack up, selling off some large inventory in the process.

“We packed up a lot of stuff and called family and friends to help move it,” said Sandi.

As part of the arrangement with Events on Main, the cafe will extend its open time by two hours on weekdays to allow access to the store.

Hen House Chicks will keep their same hours of Tuesday - Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

“You can shop and eat here now,” Sandi said.

The Hen House store will eventually expand into an unfinished back room, where they will resume offering painting classes. The back room studio is expected to be ready this fall.

The new address is 201 N. Main Street.
