Ice Age Floods chapter to present traveling lecture series

The Palouse Falls chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute has booked a traveling lecture series for the month of September. It will be presented by the chapter president, Lloyd Stoess.

Stoess will present “Changing the Course of the Columbia River” at various locations throughout the Palouse. The lecture is designed to tell the story of the Columbia and Missoula floods, and it will detail the “incredible coulees, dry falls, scablands, bars and landslides” along the path of the Columbia River.

Lecture dates include Sept. 7 at the Sunset Theatre in Connell, Sept. 11 in the library basement in Ritzville, Sept. 12 at the community center in Washtucna, Sept. 13 at The Gathering Place in LaCrosse, Sept. 19 at the library in Colfax and Sept. 12 at the hospital in Othello. All lectures will begin at 7 p.m.

The chapter conducted the traveling lecture series last year, and Stoess said it was a great success.

“It was good. We picked up some people to go on the tour because of the lectures, too.”

The chapter conducts an annual tour in October, and this year, it will begin near Othello. It will cover the Saddle Mountain loop, including the area of the Corfu landslides and the ghost town of Corfu.

“We'll hit some of the history of the area as well as the geology,” said Stoess.

The full tour details are still being worked out. It has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7, and it will cost $85 for non-members and $70 for members of the chapter. The all-day tour will include a bus ride, snack and a barbecue lunch at a vineyard, and while the tour starts in Othello, there will be pick-ups in Colfax, LaCrosse and Washtucna. The exact times are still being worked out.

It is recommended to attend a lecture prior to the tour.

“There are a lot of things in the lecture slides that won't be on the tour, and there are a lot of stops on the tour that won't be in the lecture. If you can do both of them, it really is the best thing. You don't have to do that, but it's better that way,” Stoess said.

Stoess said the Palouse Falls chapter will be present at the Palouse Empire Fair in two weeks with sign-up forms and more details.

Details on the lectures and registration for the tour can be found at the group's website.
