The St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse football team began their 2017 season with a scoring drive.
Dustin Fox got loose on a 35-yard breakaway run to the Tekoa-Rosalia 12-yard line. On the next play, quarterback Trey Fleming threw to Fox in the end zone. The ball was tipped, and Fox came down with it. Touchdown S.J.E.L, 6-0.
After a failed point-after-attempt and kickoff, Tekoa-Rosalia lined up for their first play from scrimmage. They ran the ball straight up the middle for a touchdown.
The Timberwolves won 54-6.
“These kids are getting better,” said S.J.E.L. coach Ken Gering. “It’s lots of little things that definitely can be fixed.”
On a night that the Rosalia scoreboard was dark due to an equipment problem, the Eagles were also without two defensive ends down with the flu: junior Conr Hergert and sophomore Dylan Campbell.
This week, the S.J.E.L. team will face two more external factors in their matchup Saturday at Curlew. First, whether the game will be played due to air quality from wildfire smoke. On Tuesday, kept off the practice field by smoke advisories, the team gathered in a classroom and broke down every play of the non-league Tekoa/Rosalia loss.
The Curlew game also coincides with the stock sale at Palouse Empire Fair. At least two players will be needed at Mockonema.
“Being a 3 p.m. kickoff, I don’t think they’ll be able to sell their animals and make it to the game on time,” said Gering. “If they do, great. But they’ve made that commitment and we support it.”
