Bulldog will host WC after Asotin frustration

Colfax Bulldogs will host the Wilbur/Creston Wildcats Friday in the third round of football league play. Both teams will take to the Schmuck Park turf after sustaining loses in the second NE league round Monday in the air quality edition of league play.

Colfax sustained a 0-12 loss to Asotin on the Panthers’ turf, and Wilbur Creston was topped by the LRSW Broncos 16-6.

Colfax will go into action with a 1-1 record after tagging a 9-0 shutout over Reardan on the home turf here two weeks ago. Those nine points now stand as the season total for the Bulldogs.

Monday night at Asotin the Bulldogs marked a measure of success on defense, but could not collect points with a total of seven turnovers against a Panther defense.

Colfax took the field against an Asotin team which has been rated at the top of the NE for this year’s league campaign. Asotin graduated a core of starters off last year’s state playoff team, but Colton Ball, believed to be one of the best backs in the league, rolled up 162 yards when the Panthers dropped LRSW 34-20 in the league opener.

Josh Wilkinson, who took over at QB from Panther grad Blake Magnuson, threw for 129 yards in the opener.

Monday, the Bulldog defense held Ball to 52 rushing yards.

Wilkinson passed a 66-yard shot to Thomas Martin in the first quarter to post an Asotin lead, but Colfax held them out of the zone for the rest of the half.

After the break, Dane Hall of Colfax ran the ball back to the Asotin 44 for what looked like a Colfax bid to tie up the game. Hall fumbled, and the Panthers took the ball the other direction. They were stopped by Gabe Ahmann who intercepted a Wilkinson pass on the one yard line.

Colfax avoided a safety and moved the ball out to the 46 where they again stalled out on a fumble.

Asotin collected on that turnover with Ball scoring on a three-yarder with 3:06 left in the quarter.

Colfax moved the ball on the next drive and picked up a boost with a combination roughing call and bench call against Panther Coach Jim Holman, but the Bulldogs again failed to collect.

Colfax started a frantic last drive and advanced with a pass to Gabe Ahmann and a run by Christopher Jones across the 20. They had first and goal with 1:05 left on the clock and the drive again stopped with a fumble.

Asotin finished it out sitting on the ball in the final seconds.
