Jordan Paddock of Colfax made an exhibition bull ride to finish out the card in Sunday’s edition of the rodeo. Paddock was the lone bull rider to book a score, but he didn’t collect for the ride because he had not entered.
Sunday’s 50th edition of the of the Palouse Empire Rodeo ended with Jordan Paddock of Colfax going the distance on one of the Layton and McMillan bulls and bumping what looked like a shutout for the big critters over three days of rodeo.
Paddock volunteered to make the ride after the Sunday show appeared close to closing without a bull ride.
Ryan St. Pierre of 100 Mile House, B.C., had been on the Sunday card as the lone entry in the event in front of the Sunday crowd, but he was unable to show. He had been listed on both ends of the card under a new policy which allows double entry for rough stock competitors.,
Announcer Bob Garrett said he was about to close out Sunday’s show when arena clown Kyle Bode called up to Garrett in the announcer’s stand that they had rider, Paddock.
The bull came out of the chute and went into a sustained spin, but Paddock held on for the lone qualified ride over the three-day session. Paddock’s grip hand was stuck and he hung off the side, but Butch Riebold managed to help him shake loose.
The crowd gave Paddock, who celebrated by throwing his riding helmet in the air, a big hand, and his ride earned a 95 score from the judges, but it netted zero winnings.
Paddock put up entry money for just one bull ride and was unsuccessful in the Saturday night event, his one official entry.
Courtney Grace of Greenacres competes in the barrels during Sunday’s session.
Nine riders failed to go the distance in the previous two sessions, and that left a $1,270 purse on the table. Under Pro-West rules, the $700 in entry fees put up by the entrants will go to Layton & McMillan as stock contractor. In effect, the bulls won the event.
The prize sum added by the rodeo association will revert to them.
Total purse for the rodeo’s eight events was more than $17,500.
Two wranglers split the prize fund in the bareback event with matching 74 scores. Aaron Buckley of Colville scored 74 in both of his entries on bareback for double money, and Kirk St. Clair of Blodgett, Ore., booked a 74 in the Sunday action to get a third of the pot.
