Pool declared hazard

Whitman County Public Works received a default judgment in Superior Court Thursday morning, Oct. 5, on their efforts to remove a Colfax public hazard which is actually in the county located south of the former St. Ignatius Hospital building. Deputy Prosecutor Merritt Decker filed the public nuisance civil suit July 19 in superior court.

The suit contended a vacant house on the property presented a hazard because a former swim pool at the residence had been allowed to fill up with water which is stagnant.

Defendant in the suit was Lia June Berg, owner of the property who failed to appear in court.

Attempts to serve notice of the suit to Berg at her former residence in Garfield and by mail were unsuccessful. She is believed to now be residing in Potlatch.

The unoccupied house and grounds located at 1201 S. Mill have been the site of several complaints to Colfax Police.
