Serving Whitman County since 1877
Athletic Director Bill Moos is leaving WSU to become athletic director for the University of Nebraska.
He announced his resignation just last weekend, and will start his new job by the end of the month. His announcement came as a surprise to nearly everyone, even the university president.
Moos started his career at WSU and then went to University of Oregon as athletic director. He reportedly retired and was later brought back to WSU. His goal was to bring the university to a position of prominence in athletics.
He has been successful at that. The school has new respect and credibility in football.
Moos hired Mike Leach as football coach to help him achieve his goals. He also spent nearly $150 million on Martin Stadium and the new football operations center, not to mention coaches salaries.
The spending increased, so much so that the department has been running large deficits.
Reportedly, the school administration will start concentrating on balancing budgets. Despite the revenue successes, the department may face more stringent controls.
After the profligate spending in the past years, belt tightening might prove too much (or too little) for Moos. Nebraska should have the deep pockets he needs.
With big changes such as this, speculation and rumors flourish. Mike Leach is not immune. Speculation is centering around what he might do.
With his success in football here, some say he may be bored. He might even change sports.
It is well known that he loves pirates. Maybe he’ll go to Pittsburgh.
