Coach Doering wraps up 30 years of home matches

Colfax marked the end of a big sports chapter Tuesday night when Volleyball Coach Sue Doering coached the last home match of her 30-year career.

Doering, who marked her 900th career win two weeks ago, has been on the Colfax sideline since she came here in 1988.

A special presentation before the varsity match NE match with Tekoa/Rosalia concluded with Doering presenting a team blanket to Scooter Brannan, the number-one Colfax V-net fan for decades.

Doering retired from her Colfax faculty position at the end of last year, but she opted to continue coaching the volleyball team for one more season to conclude that part of her career with this year’s seniors.

Senior members of the team also honored Tuesday included Carmen Gfeller, Abbie Miller, Piper Cai, Greta Geier and Jeszica Durheim.

Over the 29 previous seasons, Doering has headed teams which have won 13 state titles in the A or 2B divisions. Another five of her teams finished second after advancing to the title game.

That means more than 62 percent of her teams at Colfax played in state title games.

Colfax teams have also booked two third-place finishers, two fourths, one fifth and one sixth which means all but five of the Doering teams marked a state finish.

The Bulldogs rolled up a record of advancing to the state final four during an 11-year span which concluded in 2015.

Greg Lee, Spokesman-Review sports reporter, noted in a feature story on Doering that her 900-plus wins puts the Colfax coach’s career ahead of other legendary volleyball coaches in the Inland Empire.

The Bulldogs take their 10-0 record on the road to Davenport today to begin a quest for another shot at the state title in the first round of the district playoffs.
