Viking vs Wildcat showdown Friday in Colton

Chad Hansen makes tracks for the Vikings with Caleb Shanks of Touchet attempting to close ground.

The second of a pack of key games has arrived at the conclusion of the Southeast 1B football season: Garfield/Palouse vs. Colton.

After Colton lost to Sunnyside Christian Oct. 13 for their only league loss, Gar/Pal (5-1, 2-0 league) holds the edge over them without a league loss, but they haven’t played unbeaten Sunnyside Christian. They will face-off next week.

It will all decide the order of three playoff spots for the league, which consists of just five football teams this year.

On Friday night in Colton, a Gar/Pal win would make next week’s home game against Sunnyside Christian what decides the league championship.

“If we get by Colton this week, next week’s for all the marbles,” said Garfield/Palouse coach Will Woltering. “But we’re not looking past Colton. This is a huge game for us. They do what they do really well. We’re looking forward to it; so are they.”

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

If Colton (6-2, 1-1 league) beats Gar/Pal, complication ensues. Nonetheless, the Wildcats, Vikings and Knights of Sunnyside Christian have clinched the three Southeast 1B playoff spots. What will be decided in the next two weeks is the order.

Garfield/Palouse 54, Touchet 32

Garfield/Palouse made quick work of Touchet last Friday at home, leading 54-8 before halftime.

The second-string came in to finish off the Indians.

Senior quarterback Evan Weagraff led Gar/Pal, throwing for 131 yards in the game with three touchdowns, along with 15 rushes for 182 yards and another three touchdowns.

Also on the ground, senior Travis Knauff carried the ball 13 times for 104 yards and a score. Ely Hawkins had two catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns.

Colton 62, Kootenai 14

Angling for a clash against Gar/Pal, Colton downed another foe without much trouble at home Oct. 20, beating non-league Kootenai 62-14. Quarterback Parker Druffel threw 12 of 18 for 163 yards and five touchdowns. He rushed 10 times for 210 yards and three touchdowns.

Luke Vining led Wildcat receivers with seven receptions for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Chris Wolf added four catches for 72 yards and scored on a fumble recovery and return.

Sunnyside Christian 69, St. John/Endicott/ LaCrosse 20

St. John/Endicott/ Lacrosse suited up against league leaders Sunnyside Christian Oct. 21 and lost 69-20.

“We had moments,” said Eagles coach Ken Gering. “We did have some moments.”

The game, played at LaCrosse, culminated a week which included a junior varsity game at Pomeroy on Monday, which S.J.E.L. won 54-28.

Pomeroy, which only has a J.V. team this year, had 10 players for the game. By the end, they had eight.

The Pirates team has since forfeited the rest of their season.

S.J.E.L. (0-6) will now play at Touchet (0-5) Friday at 2 p.m.

Touchet's Justin Warren stretches for a catch attempt in the first half at Palouse with Jordan Paddock on defense for the Vikings.
