Tour invites locals to climate talks

The public is invited to two presentations and conversations, ‘Saving our farms, forests and fish while strengthening the economy,’ Nov. 14 to discuss climate change, how to curb it, how to adapt and what can be done.

“Be willing to engage in a conversation,” said Judy Meuth, co-leader of the Palouse Citizen’ Climate Lobby which is hosting the events along with the Palouse Audubon Society.

The Water, Wind & Fire Tour put on by the groups will make two stops in Whitman County Nov. 14. The first is at the Palouse Community Center from 12 to 1:30 p.m. with a complimentary lunch served. That evening will be another round in Colfax at the Whitman County Library from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with refreshments served.

Speaker at the events will be Dr. Steve Ghan, climate scientist and former editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research – Atmospheres.

“If done right, we and many others across the political spectrum believe we can manage climate risks while keeping agriculture, forestry and fishing strong at the same time making the market freer and improving energy choice,” the tour states.

According to Meuth, the purpose is to start a conversation with the communities about climate change and what can be done in the local communities and beyond. The tour is for everybody from farmers to businessmen.

“It’s kind of everybody’s concern,” said Meuth of climate change. The effects will become more and more apparent to everyone over time.

The stops will go over how to curb climate change and how to adapt. Possible discussion could be on solutions such as the proposed carbon tax and dividends or the cost of climate change in health, environment, FEMA and business.

The Palouse CCL draws members from Colfax, Troy, Pullman, Moscow, Uniontown and Clarkston. It works at the local and national level to address climate change and talk to people about changes, prevention, mitigation and adaptation.
